Meet the Founder

Hi, I’m Astrid

From one student to a team of instructors

I founded Tanpopo in 2023 as a solo endeavor — just me, my experience, and a passion for teaching Japanese. It has since grown into a team of me and talented native Japanese instructors, all delivering personalized online lessons.

Originally from Indonesia, I moved to Japan over 20 years ago as a student — and am still here as a permanent resident. These days I call Utsunomiya, the capital of Tochigi prefecture, home — together with my husband, three children, and two cats (yes, it’s a full house).

My language passport

Languages aren’t just my profession — they’re how I navigate the world and connect across cultures.

About the word たんぽぽ

Tanpopo — Speak. Explore. Thrive.
Japanese name たんぽぽ・タンポポ・蒲公英
English name Dandelion
Scientific name Taraxacum officinale

The name came from my son’s daycare — his class was called たんぽぽ組 (Tanpopo class). I’ve always loved the sound of the word: soft, cheerful, and unmistakably Japanese. When I started the school, it was the only name that felt right.

Speak.   Explore.   Thrive.
